Alan Reece is a vet who hates his job. He hates the long hours. He hates the horrible night calls. Most of all, he hates James Herriot for lying to him for all those years, and somehow making it all look like fun. His fiancee has left him, and he fully expects that things will only get worse.

He’s right, of course. What he’s not expecting is that one of his dreaded nocturnal farm visits will set in motion a complicated series of events involving transparent cows, aliens, zombies, and the end of all life on Earth.

Alan is about to learn that there are some things worse in life than having a job that you hate.

To say that Alan Reece was having a bad day would be an understatement; in fact Alan was having a bad life and that life was about to be cut prematurely short by the imminent end of the world. Stuck in a job he hates and missing his fiancé who, for reasons that he sympathised with, had recently become his ex-fiancé. It was bad enough being a sleep deprived vet, but when Alan attends the birth of a transparent calf he's fatefully aware that his life is just about to take a turn for the worse...

...a delight to read. If this is Marsh's first novel, then all I can say is I can't wait to see his next one.’’ - Sci Fi Online

Before Soul Purpose, there was…The Ancients, a fantasy novel which was written much longer ago, but of which Nick is still quite proud.

When he is not fiddling about with his web site, Nick is hard at work on a sequel to Soul Purpose, with the working title Past Tense. He is also trying hard to find time to write some articles for the Vet Times.
